I love this quote. I used to put it with some terra-cotta pots I had painted but I'm retiring those old pots in favor of some fresh strawberries. This quote reminds me that each day you don't have to see results of your hard work -- just knowing that you've worked hard is enough. Every time I read this I think of parenting. It reminds me to keep planting good seeds and not to get overly obsessed with the things my kids are struggling with now but to remember that we're feeding their souls truths, trying our best and loving them fully. Some days that's all you can hang on to. I've been privileged to have some friends go before me with teenagers. They have taught me that no matter how hard you try to have your kids avoid your mistakes, they will repeat some of them. Their choices are their own. I try not to wrap my identity up in my kids and to be proud of them when they do good but understand that at some point or another they will embarrass you. It's good. It keeps us humble. It keeps us seeking The Father. It keeps us from being judgmental of other parents. Knowing all these things doesn't fully prevent me from wanting to hide under the covers at times but it certainly has prepared me to give myself a little grace and not parent from a place of fear as I might have a tendency to do. Thanks older, wiser friends. You know who you are.
